Crowe claims to have prepared himself for the role by reading approximately twenty to thirty books on the subject of Robin Hood. From this he explains to the interviewer that some are very historically detailed whilst others are just pure fantasy. But what interested me was his claim that the legend of Robin Hood started about 860 AD with the Ballad of Robin the Beheader. According to Mr Crowe this Robin lived in the forest, robs people and chops of their heads and sometimes cuts off their hands as well! Did he get this from a book of pure fantasy or historical fact? Crowe may be referring to Robin Hood and the Monk and confused Little John with Robin Hood. It's Little John and Much who chop the heads off the monk and the page respectively. He may also have confused this incident with the beginning of the ballad where Robin slays 12 of the Sheriff's men before they take him into custody, although I don't recall that he chopped off their heads. I also get the impression that he tends to exaggerate so he took these incidents from the ballad and who knows what other sources and came up with Robin the Beheader. I Googled Robin the Beheader and found nothing except loads of reports about Mr Crowe's interview-its probably all a bit of a joke! Unless members of this forum know otherwise ??

Robin and his men did seem fond of removing heads. As for the date, well... I remember when Ridley Scott was talking about Richard the Lionheart as being Richard II, etc. So, there are three possibilities. 1) They possess arcane knowledge that we don't. 2) They are really from some weird alternate dimension and have replaced our Scott and Crowe. 3) They made a mistake. Unless I find anyone who knows about the 860 AD Robin Hood the Beheader ballad, I'm going with option three.

I, too, wonder where he got this information, as in all the books, both fiction and non-fiction, that I have read on the subject of Robin Hood, I have never read anything like this. As for "Robin Hood and the Monk," I know people complain about the violence of today, but I think people forget about the violence of yesterday, For example: "Robin Hood and the Monk." That story could not be written today. Not, at least, without a great deal of complaint. Indeed, the one modern adaptation I've seen of this story, the monk was killed, but his servant was spared--maybe terrorized, but spared- and sent to live in Sherwood Forest. And no age is given for the servant. He's just called Servant. Unlike the servant in the original who is clearly a boy of pre-teen years.

In my humble opinion it has to be the best modern interpretation of the legend for many years. It is not only thoroughly researched and intriguing, but as The Times describes: 'One can think of only a handful of pleasures to compare with the experience of being enveloped by the plush interiors of Adam Thorpe's classy prose and gliding along on his warmly purring narrative rides...' It is published by Jonathan Cape London.
