Any good at the old Latin? Assize Roll 479 dated 1202, Page 131, Item 762. 'Robertus de Kime [Kyme] fugit pro morte Philippi de Kim' et fuit in franco plegio Hawise de Kim' in Kime. Et nulla habuit catalla. Et Englischeria (non i) etc...murdrum. Et interrogetur Robertus.

It appears that Robert de Kime is in court concerning the death of Philip de Kime. Hawise de Kime is standing surety for him; this is the franco plegio. And Robert is to be questioned (interrogetur)
Murdrum, I understand, was a monetary fine imposed on the community if a definite verdict could not be reached.

Hawis could have been Robert's aunty, and Philip his uncle. Both de Kyme pedigrees I have show this Robert as dead by 1201 with a question mark beside his name as if the researchers were not sure. Or he could have disappeared off the radar, dis-owned. Philip De Kyme, Robert's uncle, and Hawise's brother is shown as being dead by 1197. The dates seem to fit.

The excerpt from Jim's manuscript, 'Robin Hood - Loyalist - Rebel - Ballad Hero.'
"In 1975 I received a phone call from a Mr McJohnson, who had already contacted the Nottinghamshire Thoroton Society, The Civic Society, The Robin Hood Society, and the Local Library without success. He was speaking from his friend's room at Nottingham University where he had pursued his own quest.
He had purchased some documents in Northampton, one of which he thought would be of value to Nottingham. I quote, Robin Hood and his marauders did cause an affray at Outhswell, Nottingham. The sheriff named was William Brewer. Other names were mentioned including Hugh FitzBaldric, grandfather of Brewer.
The document was in Latin which set him no problem to read to me. I am aware that pipe rolls are not so easy to read in the Latin or Norman French. So I suggested to him that Robin Hood was not spelt so. That the date was 1195 and too early for the truth.
He thought I had some information on his find until I pointed out that the spelling was 'Whood.' I had never seen the manuscript and had no prior knowledge, but would like to see it.
The 'pipe roll' was the work of Francis Peck, the Stamford, Lincolnshire, historian of the late 17th century, well known for his use of fact and fantasy. I was certain it was of the latter.
He rang me again in the evening as he was too busy to call on me personally. The query this time was did I know a Robert de Kyme. Before I could suggest it was a leg-pull he went on. Robert de Kyme of Lindsey, Lincolnshire appeared in the sheriff's court as Robin Hood. I suggested the term was 'in place of'.' He insisted on his own reading.
In the many mentions of Robert de Kyme I have never used the term Lindsey, nor have I seen it used elsewhere. There was a ring of truth in this matter.
I wrote to my mentor, Alan Rogers, and he replied, "You are right in suggesting this to be the work of Francis Peck; it is one of the lost papers I have been looking for. Get it." Alas McJohnson had moved on . Exchange of letters between Alan Rogers and I took time. He was in India and my letters were sent to Kings Lynn.
Mr McJohnson had been at Leicester University as I thought. A letter addressed to him there was re-addressed to a house in Shepshed and sent to me, 'Gone away.'
On the distaff side of the family Robert's ancestor Gilbert de Gaunt is shown as Earl of Kyme and Lindsey.
This claim pre-dates that of Dr William Stukeley in his book -1743 - 'Paleographia Britttanica.' and may be Stukeley's source."

Robert the fugitive's mother was Rohese de Maltby. His father was Simon de Kyme, knight, lord of Kyme, sheriff of Linconlshire and Dapifer to Gilbert de Gaunt. Rohese's mother was also called Rohese. She was the Countess of Lincoln, who was married firstly to Gilbert de Gaunt,(created earl of Lincoln in her name) and secondly to Robert de Maltby. Simon de Kyme's brother, William, married Rohese's sister, Margaret. Talk about keeping it in the family.
According to Farrer 'They (the de Kymes) total service of the tenements amounted in all to not much less than 30 knights fees, probably the largest holding of any knightly family in he kingdom, and far larger than that of many of the barons.'
Imagine having a son, who sided with the rebel barons, rocking the boat.
Busy lad was Philip, he had nine children,. Simon who married Rohese, William who married her sister, a third son Philip ( whose death Robert was questioned about) Roger, a Canon, prior of Kyme, Walter, Gilbert, Hawis, who married Robert de Somercotes, Bridget, who married Thomas Atte Welle, and Sybil, who married Roger de Benningworth.
