Hi all: Read Lawhead's novel "Hood" recently, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I don't give much credence to Lawhead's theory
that RH evolved as a Welsh legend that was later expropriated by England and transplanted to Sherwood/Barnesdale, but he gives it a good go in his book and he
wrote one of the more creative versions I've seen in quite some time. It's not terribly long and it doesn't drag (like Jennifer Roberson's
novels did! Arg!) and it has one of the best ambush sequences I've read. I will read the sequels in due course. Comments?

It's Lawhead's best since Arthur, but frankly that's not saying much. God knows where his talent went. My main problem with Hood,
though I had some accuracy-related niggles, was his Robin's chosen disguise. It was laughable. There are some fine scenes, though; he has a knack for
atmosphere.
Scarlet is more of the same with the pace picked up a bit, but lacks the novelty of Hood because the world is already familiar. I will read Tuck when it comes out, though. |

I may have to reread Hood and see if it improves on a second reading. I wasn't all that impressed the first time around. I couldn't even
finish Scarlet. I've never read any of Lawhead's books before, do they all revolve around Celtic themes. I think that was my major problem
with it, trying to fit Robin Hood into a Celtic mode.

It may be a case of rose-tinted glasses, as it's a long time since I read them, but I remember the first three books in the Pendragon Cycle
(Taliesin, Merlin and Arthur) as being very good. Avoid the later Pendragon books.
