Posts: 119 (12/18/07 08:40:29) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I've seen multiple modern sources - not just Benison - assert that Walter d' Evyas killed a monk during Roger Godberd's attack on the Abbot of Stanley's travelling party, and that this was the murder for which he was pardoned in 1269, making this alleged monk William fitz le Chapeleyn. What I haven't yet seen is any original source which supports this. Indeed, Walter's pardon makes no mention of William being a monk, and in any case explicitly states that further investigation has proven Walter's innocence. Does somebody who knows the material better have more information on this?

Posts: 14 (03/26/08 05:13:17) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The robbery of Stanley Abbey, Wiltshire, took place at Michaelmas 54 Henry III (1270) so the killing of William Fuiz le Chapeleyn and Walt's subsequent pardoning in Feb 1269 as no connection to this. This pardon was probably connected to Walter de Euyas's activities in the disturbance in the realm c 1266 probably along with his probable brother, John de Euyas, who was a tenent in his Lancashire lands of Robert de Ferrers. John was involved with Ferrers in plundering raids in the Forest of the Peak in 1264.

(laughs) I was going to call myself 'Graham for Queen' but I think that we all know that you are an old (drama) queen so decided you would make a better pm. (anything better than Gordon Brown, laughs) Marcus, the 1270 date comes from Just1/1222, Gaol delivery at Hereford 1276, it states that the robbery of Stanley Abbey, Wiltshire took place in Mich 1270. There is actually no evidence that now with this clarification that Godberd was even active in 1267 after his parodn on 10 Nov 1266.

I think that I have now collated every record which survives relating to them and even now when I go back and look at them, they still thrill, my imagination runs wild when I read the entries. I may post some more entries relating to them, they were actually captured and held in Nottingham Castle, so Robin Hoodish, but I just don't see how you can get around the names? I went searching in the coram rege rolls of the late 1260's and early 1270's at the PRO, Kew. I just wondered if Godberd may have taken the alias 'Robin Hood' and that it might be recorded, but there is absolutely no evidence. Godberd really deserves to a folk hero as much as Fulk fitz Waryn or Eustace the Monk or even Robin.

Posts: 293 (05/20/08 13:50:25) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I note you say there's no evidence that Godberd was active before 1270: it's true I've not seen his name mentioned before then, and you seem to know the evidence better than I do, but what do we know about the "enemies of the King" whom Roger Leyburn fought in Duffield and Charnwood in 1267? If they weren't Godberd's men, who might they have been? (Of course, we still have a gap here: what was going on in 1268 and 1269?) (Though it appears that Robert of Alfreton and Robert the Monk weren't connected with him, as the 1267 date I relied on earlier for their activities was a misprint: they were in fact captured and rescued in 1277. Which just goes to show the value of double-checking everything, but also means that Sherwood was still swarming with outlaws five years after Godberd's capture.) A lot of outlaws are neglected, not having been the subject of romance. Who thrills to the name of Gilbert Middleton, or Adam the Leper? Last Edited By: 1981Marcus 05/20/08 13:59:45. Edited 1 times.
