Sienna Miller has landed the role of Maid Marian in a remake of Robin Hood, the actress confirmed.

Former hellraiser Russell Crowe will play the Sheriff of Nottingham in the Hollywood film, directed by Sir Ridley Scott.

Expected to be called Nottingham, the movie focuses on the love triangle between the sheriff, Maid Marian and Robin Hood.

It comes as Miller's own love life is in the headlines with reports that she split with Notting Hill star Rhys Ifans because he allegedly became jealous over her renewed friendship with ex-boyfriend Matthew Rhys.

Crowe and Sir Ridley worked together on the 2000 movie Gladiator, in which the actor won an Oscar for his role as Maximus.

Miller, 26, is currently promoting her new film The Edge of Love, in which she stars alongside Keira Knightley.

She said she "could not have a better part" and working with Crowe and Sir Ridley was "as good as it gets".

She told the BBC: "It's happening. I just found out. It's the most exciting news in the world."

The movie is expected to be told from the Sheriff of Nottingham's point of view.

Robin Hood will not be the hugely heroic figure of countless productions of the story. In the film, the sheriff's attempt to instil order amid King John's taxes and arrests are threatened by the outlaw's anarchical exploits.
