In the extended version of the film, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Sir James Holt is said to be the world's leading scholar on the Robin Hood
legend.
Does Holt still believe that there was more than one Robin Hood? I have to say I agree with this notion. I believe "robinhood" may have been a period
term for outlaw, much like "wolfshead".

Lady archer, did you see my late uncle Jim in the extended version of Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves?' He is the guy that says something like, I am the only man who knows where Robin Hood is really buried. I really must read Holt again some time. |

Rob, I have seen your uncle making that comment, could you elaborate more? Does he mean that he knows where the Kyme family are buried so in effect Robert de
Kyme b1210? I presume Kyme, South or North would be the/ a burial ground for the Kymes, the grounds of the Priory of Kyme or perhaps Rufford Abbey was used as
Philip was a benefactor of both of these. Fountains Abbey was used for the Percys in the same way..

Lady A, when you say 'Robinhod' was the term for an outlaw, are you taking your evidence was the Robynhod surnames? If you are then a discussion may be
arising as I cannot agree with anyone who cites those surnames as relating to the legend of Robin Hood and this is after alot of research on the subject. I
have run out of time but after a bulk of research, a similar idea along these lines but not the same is now one of my own origins for the legend. I will
discuss it next time.

I think Holt's book is still the best of all. He gives a lot of detail and covers nearly everything worth covering, although I think he gives a bit too
much air in his discussion of Yeoman. At the same time its level headed and he does not go into wild speculation, like some others. In my opinion, on equal
footing, is Rymes of Robin Hood (Dobson and Taylor) excellent book and excellent work on the ballads.

I agree with Lady Archer, not about the proper family name but the term "Robber in the Whood" which has become corrupted to 'Robin Hood.'

Well, how we can know where a man who may or may not have existed is buried is a moot point.
It is, however, reasonable to suppose that somebody called Robert Hood was buried at Kirklees. It's perfectly possible, though, that the name was a coincidence and the tradition connecting the tomb with the outlaw arose later. |

Since the original graveslab's "Thomas" had no surname, I'd need to see evidence of a William Goldburgh living in the Wakefield area at the
same time before I'd accept that as definite. After all, there were other Robert Hoods living none too far from Kirklees.
I don't think anybody here had ever claimed the later graveslab to be anything other than a forgery. |

Graham, good to see you back and on form. Just a slight alteration to my above post. It was the Armytages not the Savilles. Slip of the thought process, but
Jim fixed it for me. I asked a question,"What year did Robin Hood become the Earl of Huntingdon?"
Do you have some evidence Graham; if so, then I would love to hear it. I have always thought that Robin Hood was never pardoned and died an outlaw. He left King Edward's service on a lie, and stayed in the forest for 22 more years 'for all dread of Edward our king.'

Seeing as your uncle took up William Stukeley's fictitious pedigree stating that Robin Hood was Robert Fitzooth, commonly called Robin Hood, the pretended
Earl of Huntingdon, and after a disclaimer from Burks Peerage he had to change it to Robert de Kyme, proving for those with eyes to see that the whole thing is
a fabrication, then I really wouldn't worry whether Robert de Kyme was the PRETENDED earl of Huntingdon or not, it is immaterial and you will gain nothing
by going down that road.

Graham, you have not read my post. Stukeley does not state that Robin Hood was the Earl of Huntingdon. All he says is that he could have had a pretence - caim - to it, albeit a very poor one. Where have I stated that Robert de Kyme was the pretended Earl of Huntingdon. Again read my post.
Robert Fitzhooth was Robert de Kyme as I have explained many times. Who had to change what after a disclaimer from Burke's Peerage? And Graham, please print Hunter's version of the life of Robin Hood. I could do with a good laugh: include his fellow Yorkshireman, Walker's version
too. Let's knock that nonsense on the head once and for all. |

Recently received another de Kyme family tree from the Lincolnshire Archives. According to this one, a Ranulfus Fitzooth, lord of Kyme, married Maud, filia,
illigitima ( illigitimate daughter) of Gilbert de Gant and Rohaisa. Ranulfus's coat of arms is a shield with two bands running diagonally from top left to
bottom right.
His grandson is shown as Robert Fitzhooth or fitzhood, known as Robin Hood. A note at the bottom of the page reads,' Thoroton in his history of Notts says that Robert fitzooth was descended from Gilbert de Gant by the female line and was thus entitled to the earldom of Huntingdon. But this is clearly not shown. His illigitimacy would haverse? such claims which was never regarded as appertaining to the family of Gant. His being known by the name of Hood may perhaps be accounted for by the unfixed pronunciation of the old Saxon letter D sometimes giving it the sound of the D and others that of the TH, so that the name OOD, or OED or Hood. The arms ascribed to this personage whose unlawful acts are said by some of his admires to be compensated by his liberal jollity are the same (with a slight difference) as those assigned to Fitzooth as seen above.' Robert fitzooth's (Robin Hood) coat of arms is shown as same design as Ranulf's with the exception being that the bands running diagonally have wavy edges.
