John de Eyvill comes from beyond the Trent to meet the earl) John de Eyvill is another totally fascinating man on par with Godberd. He and Baldwin Wake had held out in the Forest of Duffield in 1266 before they were defeated at Chesterfield. It was one of his rebel strongholds. Around April 1267, Eyvill came from beyond the Trent to meet Gloucester, beyond the Trent is Notinghamshire and Derbyshire, Eyvill came from where the robberies had been taking place and the attack on Nottingham Castle.

Posts: 67 (05/29/08 03:14:33) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	On the 27 March 1267, Henry informed Roger de Leyburn that Eyvill 'cum magna multitudine armatorum nuper insulam de Ely exivit se versus partes Londonii divertens' and instructed him to pursue the rebel leader by day and by night and hold him 'tanquam inimicum nostrum capitalem'. Leyburn left Cambridge in pursuit on 8 April, on the 9th he reached Woburn, 10th Bedford. He failed to capture the rebels who reached Southwark safely on the 11th. Despite his failure, Leyburn presented the exchequer with a bill of £11 4s 8 and a half d for his three day chase. The events surrounding John de Eyvill around April 1267 are fascinating. He is a totally fascinating person, 'the forgotten rebel' as Rob F once so eloquently phrased it. In the winter of 1266/67, Eyvill and his men did hold up as rebels around Sherwood just as they had done earlier in May 1266, using Duffeld Frith as their rebel basecamp. Eyvill's lands were extensive in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, Cundall, Leckby, Thornton on the Hill, Thornton Bridge, Kilburn, Kirkdale in North Yorkshire. North Anston quite close to Barnsdale, Addingfleet in the Eats Riding. Eyvill also had holdings right next to Sherwood, Landeford, Egmanton, Thorpe Deyvill. The most significant manor was Kilburn, Eyvill had a crenellated house and a township called 'Hode' in the vill of Kiburn. He also had a younger brother called Robert who was at Axholme with him and surrendered to Prince Edward at Bykers Dyke near Sherwood in Dec 1265. There is no direct evidence of Robert actually being a rebel after that. The Eyvills actually held 'Hode' and could conceivably also have used that name as a place of origin, surname, John de Hode, Robert de Hode. Tantalising but again just no evidence. In fact, the every record they are clearly called Eyvill. Another possible origin, as strong as Godberd, but no evidence and I think because not even one record, the Eyvills didn't take the name 'Hode'. Massive, massive fan of Roger Godberd and Walter Devyas (Robehod will confirm) but there is just evidence that he took the name RH or was known by that name? Brian Benison says that Godberd became known by that name, why? No record, not even called Robert? For Godberd to be RH there will have to be a record of him being called Robin Hood or Robert Hode. Don't ever expect one myself, not the origin.
