There's not much else to go on other than the tradition from the plays and games where interestingly enough I think Marian was bawdily paired off with Friar Tuck. :-D

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that you don't think Robin was gay? I mean that wouldn't be in keeping with his love for women would it? (You know that merrie means famous don't you?) No, I didn't know that "merrie" meant famous. And no, I don't think the Robin of legend was gay because that would be speculating and on what evidence? Homosocial perhaps, but not homosexual. That reminds of a scene from Robin Hood, Men in Tights: Robin Hood: You are entering the territory of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. Rabbi Tuckman: Faygeles? (Yiddish term for gay males) Merry Men: [clears their throats, trying to act macho] Robin Hood: No, no. We're straight. Just... merry.

That this lady is Marian is itself speculation. The early history of Marian goes like this: 1283 - Adam de la Halle's "Robin and Marion". The couple are shepherds and the specifics of the play don't appear to have influenced the legend, but it has been argued that this is nevertheless Marian's ultimate origin. 1306 - De la Halle visits England and may have introduced his play at court. c. 1375 - The names "Robin and Marian" are used as archetypes of rusticity, possibly referring to de la Halle, but perhaps also to the May Games. 1503 - First mention of the May Games character Maid Marian. Throughout the sixteenth century and much of the seventeenth there are several references to Marian appearing in the May Games WITHOUT Robin Hood (e.g. "The Witch of Edmonton", 1621). Early sixteenth century - "Robin Hood and the Friar", the only surviving May Games play with "a Lady" in it, not certainly identified as Marian. c. 1590 - Marian is an established figure, appearing in Greene's "George a-Greene" though she isn't in the original 1557 ballad, while Eleanor de Montfort takes her part in Peele's "Edward I". (Peele's Llywelyn, doling out roles after deciding to "become" Robin Hood, names a Marian, a Little John and a Tuck, but no others; the influence of the May Games is obvious. The dramatic tradition is clearly somewhat different from the ballad tradition.) 1594 - Drayton's "Matilda" tells the story of Matilda Fitzwalter, not at this stage identified with Marian. 1598 - Munday's "Downfall", which he rewrites to change his original "Marian Lacy" to Matilda Fitzwalter after deciding on the identification.

Maid, is the abbreviation of Maiden - Old English maegden, maid - virgin. Marian - of or relating to the the Virgin Mary. You are right in saying that she was originally paired with Friar Tuck in the May Games. The chaste Maid Marian on the one hand and Friar Tuck, the Lord of Misrule, on the other. Something to do good being countered with bad, positives and negatives, etc. Have you read 'Robin Hood and the Potter.' Robin flirts outrageously with the sheriff of Nottingham's wife in that ballad. No thought for his Maid Marian there then.

(Graham looks like the bride of Frankenstein even before he puts on his suspenders, dress and makeup. As for Robhen and his dressing up!) I am one of the middle old codgers, 38 years old, there are some 'young uns' on here, David 28ish I know, not all old codgers, laughs. I have been really seriously interested in the history of Robin Hood, and researching it seriously now for about 7 years and I can honestly say that I haven't ever personally met any young lady/ladies who shares my interest, passion for the subject (Even when he gets dressed up, Graham is still abit old for me) Makes a very nice change.
