All these versions with Maid Marian and Friar Tuck in them make me scream. You (well, at least I hope you do) and I know that these characters are later additions and have nothing to do with the story. So too, this constant present of Guy of Guisborne, and the continuing theme that he is a bumbling fool, Robin, according to the tradion, only met him once and killed him, end of story. As for this new series, well, if it wasn't for the fact that at least it helps to keep the legend alive, it is rubbish. So, now, people in England during the middle-ages suddenly know 'kung-fu'. I am surprised they don't suddenly turn into vampires, to boot!

The current Sheriff is pretty-to coin a word-vampirical. Just witness him around both Guy and Eve in "A Thing or Two About Loyalty" in series 1. As for authenticity, legends originate from multiple sources and grow and evolve with time. I doubt there could be any single "authentic" rendition of the Robin Hood legend at this point. Some interpretations are excellent; others leave something (or much) to be desired; and all are products of their societies and times. True Robin aficiandos need to check them all out and take each at its own face value. "I'd like to be a pessimist, but this is a luxury I cannot afford." (By "Robin Hood", do we mean the original? As far as I'm concerned there was more than one, but this is debated, of course.) Besides, it is consistent with Medieval lore to have elements of courtly love, so in the end, having Marian remain in a series just adds dramatic effect, and character depth.

(Seriously, I am not making this up.) Or, Marian may be symbolic of Mary, the Blessed Virgin - as Robin Hood was devoted to her, and honored her as a devout Catholic. The point remains though, is that a series is more dramatic if Robin has a love interest of sorts (whoever she may be), and Marian is the best-known female to accompany Robin Hood in the (later part, at least) legend.

She appears around the same time as Marian's only appearance in a ballad: but Marian had been part of the dramatic tradition since the early sixteenth century at least - and Friar Tuck even further back. On what basis are ballads deemed more "authentic" than plays? If any type of source has more authority, it should be the chronicles - and the early ones give Robin only one named companion, Little John. Ballad characters such as Will Scarlet, Much, and the mysterious Gilbert, are absent.

What I did say is that Marian "is a later addition to the legend and ballads", not to mention that the ballads hardly mention her. But if we're going to talk about plays, too - Munday invented a love triangle between Robin, Marian, and Prince John.
