The knowledge of posters on this Forum never ceases to amaze me. May I ask if this knowledge stretches as far as the fascinating topic of Heraldry?
Originally I understood that coats of arms were presented to certain families so they could be recognised as friend or enemy in a battle situation. Having
tentatively looked further in to the subject I am informed that this was not so. The decorating of a shield was originally nothing more than personalizing
your own property. Bit like decorating your pencil case or school bag or whatever. It was only later that the College of Arms became involved to co-ordinate
these family coats of arms.
My query, and I've tried various Internet sites without too much success is, does anyone on the Forum know if different families can be in possession of
the same coat of arms? I know that certain members of the same family can own different coats of arms; or variations on the same theme.
