The thing is, the 1225 guy is just an obscure criminal whose name happened to be Robert Hood. It wasn't an especially unusual name, and it doesn't
prove that the name was already legendary - nor did Holt ever claim so: indeed, he tentatively suggested that "Hobbehod" as the ORIGINAL Robin. Holt
argued that the Robehod surname was evidence that the legend existed by 1261/2, but that's doubtful. We can't pin it down at any point before 1377.

which appears to be oldest mention of a possible Robin Hood. If Robin was legendary in Prince John's time, there would be more mention of him than just on
a single pipe role. By John's time, record keeping was more complete. So it would stand to reasonable speculation that the 'legendary' Robin Hood
predated the Robert...

Sherwood, by Parke Godwin is pretty much my favorite book abut Robin Hood. It takes the legend and places him farther back in history to 1066 at the time of
the Norman conquest. The Robin Hood legend goes back farther than the Lionheart era, so this is believable. After all, I think it was that Scottish historian,
John Major, who made Robin royalty and placed him in the 1190s, iirc. My favorite character in this book was not Robin, but Ralph the sheriff.
